Name | This is, oddly enough, where you put your character's name. Chances are most guild members will address him by this name as a default. This is also how the character's name will appear on all pages within the Miscellaneous Magic-User's Guild (hereafter referred to as MMG). |
Character Picture | If there is a picture of your character on the Internet, put the address here. A picture can really help others see your character as you do, but this is by no means required. |
Full Name | Your character's whole name, including surname and middle name (if any), goes here. Each name in real life has a significance attached to it. Your character's names may as well. |
Nicknames | Various other names by which your character is known, usually a shorter version of his real name but also names that he picked up in his life. The origin of these names, and how your character feels about them, is a great place to add something special to your character's history later on. |
Quote | Any special quips that the character is apt to repeat ("Oops!" or "Magic was not meant to be a toy for the powerful but a tool for the intelligent."). These are a few words that give an insight into your character's personality. |
Birthday | The month and day your character was born. This is as important as any birthday in real life. Is he a child of spring or the offspring of fall? Does your character have a horoscope? Does his birthday fall on a holiday? Noteworthy details can be placed in Personality, History, or Miscellaneous Info below. |
Age | How old is your character? Did he just cross the thresh-hold of manhood or stumble over the hill of old age? |
Gender | What gender is your character? It is possible for some characters to have none, both, or a gender unique to their species. Peculiar characters and races such as these should be mentioned in the History or Miscellaneous Info section below. |
Height | How tall is your character? |
Weight | How much does your character weigh? |
Species | Human, Elf, Dwarf, etc. Take guidance from racial stereotypes but do not feel confined by them. Your character should be familiar (a gruff dwarf) but unique (he drinks fine wine instead of ale). If your character has an alternate form, such as a human shapeshifter stuck in bird form or an Esper that often travels as a wolf, indicate the alternate form in parentheses, like "Human (Bird)" or "Esper (Wolf)". |
Profession | What does your character do for a living? This could be as simple as Adventurer (also known as Unemployed) or something more, such as Apothecary. Note your profession does not automatically transfer into a paying job at the MMG (though it is rather easy to get one). |
Rank | This is your character's status in the MMG, based on his mastery of magic. All new characters start out as Magicians with no exceptions (hence the reason you cannot change this field). Your character may advance in rank at the discretion of the Guild officials (generally based on activity on the MMG boards). |
Appearance | |
What does your character normally look like? Descriptions of your character's size, hair, eyes, and clothing go below.
Hair Color | Is it familiar like brown or fantastic like green? Keep in mind that your character has to live with whatever choice you make. |
Eye Color | Vivid blue or steely grey? Hazel? Is each eye different? |
Hairstyle | How does your character wear his hair? This is a minor opportunity to divulge more about your character. Does he never tend to it because he is lazy or too busy? Does he spend hours combing it perfectly because he is vain? Is it a simple or complex style? |
Outfit | What clothes does your character wear? Again, part of your character can shine through in the types of clothes he wears. Are they wrinkled and dirty, picked up off the floor this morning? Or are they neat and pressed with military-quality creases? Does he wear flashy, bright colors or somber, darker tones? A simple shirt and pants combo or a multi-layered ensemble complete with lace and cape? |
Dominant Hand | Left, Right, Upper Left, Second from the Right in the Middle Row, etc. |
Alignment | What is your character's average attitude in life? Alignment is made up of two separate axes, Lawful/Chaotic and Good/Evil. Lawful characters abide by a general schedule, are reliable, honest, and hard-working (lawful does not mean an automatic adherence to the law, just an ordered lifestyle). Chaotic characters follow their whims, have very flexible schedules, and enjoy their freedom from routine (chaotic does not mean completely random, just unstructured). Good characters prefer to help others. Evil characters prefer to hurt, oppress, and kill others. Alternatively, a character can be neutral on either or both axes, meaning he is either uncommitted or seeks a balance between the two extremes. The nine possible alignments are Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, Lawful Evil, Neutral Good, True Neutral, Neutral Evil, Chaotic Good, Chaotic Neutral, and Chaotic Evil. Remember, alignment is an average, not a straitjacket. Your character may act out of or even contrary to his alignment on occasion. |
Primary / Secondary Attunements | Think of the MMG as a university for aspiring magic-users (as it rightly is). Your primary attunement is your character's "major" and your secondary attunement is your character's "minor" (however, there is no double majoring). Your character's attunements can be based on an interest in a type of magic, a natural talent with a certain type of magic, or a little of both. |
Magic Types and Experience | If your attunements are your majors, then this is your earned credits. Typically a character will have higher percentages for his attuned magic types and a smattering of other magic "electives". However, starting characters should not have high percentages in any field, let alone multiple fields. The point of MMG is for your character to learn magic and grow; contrary to belief, school is not more fun when you already know everything. Your character should begin with ~25-35% in his primary attunement, ~10-20% in his secondary attunement, and less than 10% in a handful of electives (about 60 total percentage points). |
Elemental Status | |
These are magic types that affect your character in special ways. Each assignment should be carefully thought out and used to add detail to your character. Why does he get stronger when hit with a fireball? Why has lunar magic always caused him such immense pain? Any element should appear no more than once on the list. Your character should not nullify and dilute fire or absorb and concentrate Ice. Very rarely a character will be an exception to this rule. The reasoning for the exception should be explained in the Miscellaneous Info section below.
Absorbed | When magic of this type is cast upon your character, he absorbs the power of the spell to replenish his own magic or health, increase his speed, strength, agility, etc, or some other effect. The absorbed spell energy is used for some purpose unlike Nullified where the energy is simply countered. |
Nullified | Your character is not affected by this type of magic; it fails to have any effect. |
Diluted | This type of magic has a lesser effect upon your character, such as half damage, lesser duration, partial effect, or some other reduction. |
Concentrated | For some reason, this type of magic is particularly effective against your character. He takes double damage, it lasts twice as long, there is an additional, unforeseen, detrimental effect, etc. |
Abilities | Special abilities your character has. In addition to spellcasting, many members of the MMG possess special powers like levitation, innate understanding of magical theories, or non-magical shapeshifting. |
Experience | What understanding does your character have of magic? How did he come to learn magic? Where is he on the road to becoming a powerful arch-mage or lich or celestial priest, etc.? |
Teachers | Who taught your character magic? Was he self-taught or did he study under the village wizard? How does he feel about his teacher? Did he struggle under the guidance of one master and excel with another? Once again, this is a good place to add some depth to your character. |
Personality | What is your character like? This is what the whole thing boils down to. We know what your character looks like, but who is he? This is a place for things that would be apparent in a cordial conversation or a few minutes of social interaction. Does he walk with a long, confident stride that deters interruption? Does he smile and maintain eye contact while speaking or look down his nose with contempt? Is he constantly stumbling about, smoothing his shirt, tugging at his braided beard? Does he speak with his hands, using grandiose gestures? This explanation can be short; his personality should not be (though he can be very short on personality, as in a 'wet-blanket'). |
History | What has happened to your character and what did he do? If you do not know where to start, follow Lewis Carroll's advice, "Start at the beginning and, when you get to the end, stop." Do not feel obliged to reveal every detail of your character's past. Sometimes you want him to have a few secrets that can be brought to light in a roleplay. | Misc. Info | Anything else you want to tell us about your character but cannot fit into another category? Put it here. |
Equipment | |
This is your character's stuff. His magic sword, ring of flaming doom, and magical pet frog are all types of equipment. Not every coin, button, and piece of string he carries needs to be listed (that would be a bookkeeping nightmare!), only significant equipment should appear. However, what your character considers to be "significant" reveals a little bit of who he is. Starting characters generally will not have equipment in all five categories, and probably will not have much equipment in any one category at all.
Weapons | What weapon does your character wield? Is it a simple longsword, a devastating battle axe, a humble staff? Is it magical? Does it have a name or special powers? |
Armor | What armor protects your character? Is it off-the-rack chain mail, quiet leather, clunky but impenetrable plate mail? Is it magical? Does it have any special effects like bursting into flame or appearing when your character says a magic word? |
Accessories | These are other special items of clothing and apparel that generally have special powers. Examples include boots that let you move faster, gloves that grant minor telekinesis, a necklace that allows you to breathe underwater, etc. |
Items | These are usually mundane items that hold a special significance for your character or minor magical items that are not worn such as healing potions or scrolls. A locket from a lover, a favorite childhood toy, a rusty dagger from a dead friend, a healing potion, a magical scroll, and a spellcaster's crystal are all acceptable as items. |
Creatures | Has your character befriended some special creature? Does he travel with a loyal hound, a talkative parrot, a mischievous imp, a legendary phoenix, etc? How did he meet the creature? How does the creature look and act? What powers does it have? Does it know any tricks? |
Out-of-Character Information | A self-explanatory section (for once!), none of the information below deals with your character in-game. This is where you provide information for the Guild and its members to contact you, explore your work on the Internet, and discover more about your character. |
E-Mail Address | This is the address higher guild officials will use if they need to contact you for some reason and will also be used to authorize purchases, get a job, etc within the Guild's site. This field is hidden from view on character bios to avoid misuse of members' e-mail addresses. Note this is a required field and the address you list must be valid. Any form submitted without an e-mail address (or with an e-mail address that is not yours) will be thrown out as there is no way to make sure that particular member sent it. |
IM Account(s) | This is the quickest method to contact a particular member. Please list any and all of the IM accounts you wish to list in your bio in this field and mark in parentheses which IM service it corresponds to. The abbreviations for each service are as follows: (AIM) - AOL Instant Messenger, (ICQ) - ICQ, (MSNM) - MSN Messenger, and (YM) - Yahoo! Messenger. More abbreviations will be added in the future as more IM programs become available. |
Website | The address for your personal website. Please include both the address of the page, as well as the title. |
Character Info | The address for your character's bio outside the MMG's site, if you have one. You may want to include this if you have any other information in your bio that you think is important but cannot list on the MMG bio. |
Other Characters | If you have more than one character at the MMG (not likely, but possible), they will be listed here. You cannot change this field, and it will not be listed on your character bio unless you have another character at the MMG. |
