Abilities Spellcasting, Magical Aptitude (handles magical theory with amazing skill), Wild Magic Student (able to manipulate the flow of the Weave without sohluahk crystals)
Experience Strovil studied in the Arcann Tower of the Magic House for eight years, longer than any previous student. Every year he filled all of his available electives with Magic Theory and Weave Manipulation. Von Ritter, a very powerful and knowledgeable wizard who for years had been studying the underlying principles of magic, rather than the (relatively) simple direction of magical forces into spells, taught both courses.

Strovil had shown an amazing aptitude for grasping and expanding upon Von Ritter's hypotheses. He was also instrumental in proving one of the key assumptions that Von Ritter had based his later theories on, that magical forces could be accessed directly, without the need to direct it into spells.

So, Von Ritter asked Strovil to become his research assistant and Strovil was overcome with joy. This is what led to Strovil taking eight years of magical schooling with Von Ritter as his primary instructor.

Teachers Archmage Von Ritter, Self-Teaching via experimentation, and traditional research
Personality Strovil ceaselessly searches for a greater, deeper knowledge of magic. He willingly places himself in dangerous situations to increase his understanding of spells, spellcasting, magic, and the Weave. Though it often appears that he is *trying* to die during some of his experiments, Strovil only resorts to field testing when traditional research has reached an end. He cares for the health and well-being of others, ensuring that his experiments harm no innocents. He often takes time off his research to entertain common folk with cantrips (minor magical effects).

Strovil cannot stand evil. He recognizes the possibility that evil has an accepted place in existence but the reality of any situation usually discounts its necessity. He also possesses a healthy disdain of rude and rash behavior.

Strovil possesses an extensive vocabulary which, though he prefers to speak so all may understand him, occasionally infects his speech. His curiosity leads to impromptu investigations of any object, person, creature, or phenomenon that happens to catch his eye. If not for his keen intellect (and quick hand) many of the intriguing discoveries he has made would be lost and forgotten.

History While at the Magic House, Strovil ignored most of the traditional methods of magic and focused entirely on mastering the new system that he was developing with Von Ritter. Under the new system, the mage placed his trust in the Weave (the underlying source of magic which mages tap in order to create their spells) by simply tearing reality asunder and allowing the raw magical energy to create whatever effect it desired. Von Ritter christened this new system Wild Magic because the caster had no control over what effect the energies had.

Soon after Strovil had learned the basics of Wild Magic, the Council got wind of Von Ritter's unauthorized experiments and shut them down. He asked Strovil to take the blame so that he could continue using the Arcann Tower's facilities to further his studies. Strovil knew that accepting the blame would mean he would be expelled from school, but he believed that Von Ritter was very close to discovering a method of control over the magical energies so he accepted responsibility for the experiments.

Strovil left the Magic House and began to wander the world. He constantly practiced his magic in isolated areas so as to not harm anyone nearby if the mana (as the energy is called) manifested a dangerous effect. This practice made him more aware of magic in general and he began to take notes about his experiences. He noticed certain trends within the Weave and created the Theory of Magical Flow. This allowed him to more accurately predict what sort of effect his spells would have, but it required a lot of experimentation to use accurately. It was necessary for him to observe the effects of wild magic for a few hours before he was able to judge the flow (and even then the predictions were shaky as the magic continued to fluctuate throughout the Weave).

He sent his theory to Von Ritter and hoped that it would be useful to his teacher. Unbeknownst to him, his theory was the very key to unlocking a new piece of the wild magic puzzle. Von Ritter had discovered sohluahk crystals by performing certain spells in conjunction with wild magic. These crystals reflected the flow of the weave around them, but at first he was unsure of the meaning of their resonating colors and constantly changing eddies. However, with Strovil's theory, he was able to deduce these properties and began to experiment with the crystals.

One of his experiments went awry and unfortunately Von Ritter was consumed in a pustule of pure chaos summoned by his wild magic. When the Council discovered he was missing, they summoned Strovil back to the Magic House and informed him of Von Ritter's death. They also gave Strovil Von Ritter's personal possessions, as he directed in his will. Strovil received Von Ritter's notebooks and a mysterious box that the Council was unable to open.

While perusing his teacher's notebooks, Strovil discovered the method of opening the locked box. Inside was Von Ritter's collection of sohluahk crystals. They had merged into a single, large crystal. This was exactly what Von Ritter had been attempting to do as a larger sohluahk crystal exerted proportionately more control over raw mana than the small shards he had accidentally created.

Strovil assembled a magic staff and capped it with the sohluahk crystal. He experimented with it and found that wild magic no longer summoned a completely random effect. Now he was able to shape the energies and manipulate them into a basic form, which was then taken over by the chaos. This meant he was able to cast a normal spell and the wild magic would then take that basic form and mutate it, sometimes enhancing and sometimes degrading the effect. Armed with a more reliable form of magic, Strovil began to wander the world once again and came to find himself in the fledgling town of Esphire.

While in Esphire, Strovil came to a much greater mastery of wild magic. He found that he no longer needed the sohluahk crystal to manipulate the mana flow in an area. His continued exposure and research allowed him to 'feel' the Weave and direct the energies just as well as when he first began using the crystals. However, Strovil's wild magic ability is exceptionally refined while using the crystals.

Misc. Info Wild Surges
Wild surges are fluctuations in a spell caused by randomization or chaos in the source of the spell energy. These randomizations can make the spell weaker or stronger.

Greater Surges
A more extreme fluctuation than a wild surge, these randomizations can cause a spell to have a totally different effect or backfire upon the caster.

Weapons
Sohluahk Staff (Staff)
A five-foot long, gnarled wooden staff topped with a large sohluahk crystal. The crystal is about the size of a human fist and it has twelve smaller crystals (natural amethyst shape) jutting out from it in various directions. It constantly changes color and inside there is a swirling eddy of magical energy that is only visible upon close inspection.

(A sohluahk crystal reflects the flow of the Weave around it and the chaotic swirls inside filter the rampant energies of raw mana summoned nearby and channel its mutative properties in a less random fashion.)

Armor
Mage Armor (Ring)
An invisible but tangible field of force surrounds the wearer of this ring, providing the approximate protection of a suit of chain mail armor. Unlike mundane armor, Mage Armor is weightless and unrestrictive. Because Mage Armor is a force effect, incorporeal creatures are not able to bypass it the way they do normal armor.

Accessories
Ioun Stone (Stone)
This small grey stone orbits the head of the user at a distance of 2-3 feet. It glows as brightly as a torch. By mental command the user can move the stone in any direction to a distance of 30 feet. The stone flies with incredible speed and control but lacks the mass to cause any damage. It can be retrieved from its orbit and stowed when not in use.

Creatures
Berronar (Pseudodragon Familiar)
A pseudodragon looks like a hatchling red dragon but the ruby scales are smoother and much softer than those of a true dragon. The small creature is approximately 2 1/2 feet long (1 1/2 foot tail, 8 inch body, 4 inch neck and head) and has a 2 foot wingspan. Their long tail ends in a vicious stinger; the tiny mouth is filled with needle-like teeth.

A pseudodragon possesses minor magical abilities that aid its survival and, when bonded as a familiar, greatly aid its master. Berronar is able to communicate telepathically with any creature within 60 feet that speaks common (the language of the world at large) or sylvan (the language of woodland creatures). A pseudodragon's keen eyes cannot be fooled by invisibility or illusions that conceal locations. Like a chameleon, Berronar can blend with the surroundings, particularly forests or other areas overgrown with vegetation. He is immune to all effects, magical or otherwise, that cause sleep or paralysis (one of the only traits it inherited from true dragons). Finally, the stinger on his tail contains potent venom that puts other creatures to sleep. Initially the victim will sleep for a few minutes; if sufficiently weakened, the victim will enter a comatose state and sleep for 2-3 days.

Psuedodragons behave much like house cats. They enjoy being stroked and love to perch on a human's shoulder to rub against his soft, warm neck. Berronar especially enjoys the ticklish feeling that he gets from Strovil's beard. The few audible sounds that Berronar is capable of: he purrs when content, hisses when scared or threatened, and emits a birdlike chirp when happy or excited.

As a familiar, Berronar is able to communicate empathically with Strovil up to a mile away. The link is primitive and cannot convey complex messages. He can benefit from spells cast on Strovil as though the two were one and is able to deliver Strovil's spell effects via touch.

Strovil came across Berronar while studying the Weave in the area of the Towne of Esphire. Berronar took a liking to the strange effects that accompanied Strovil's spells and decided to accompany the wizard. He delights in the random chaos that Strovil is able to unleash but has come to realize that it is too dangerous to play with haphazardly. His favorite snack is fresh-sliced apple slices dipped in honey.
